When is the last time someone discussed a movie here? Jeeeeez!
Three movies that blew me away this summer: FOOD INC. Absolutely essential. ***** EXAMINED LIFE **** Great documentary that asks ten people highly regarded in their fields philosophical questions about meaning and various other topics...each person is given 10 minutes. Dr. Cornel West throughs down the mojo in this provocative and surprisingly emotional film. TETRO **** Francis Ford Coppola's "Indie" film set in Argentina works best when the three main characters are exchanged in a dark family interplay; the rest is more of a tribute to Italian cinema (specifically Fellini) and the cinematography alone is worth the price of admission. The Hurt Locker... Mixed feelings. Touted as an 'apolitiical' Iraqi War film, this film is a suspenseful look at one brave bomb diffuser's absolutely terrifying job...the film somehow manages to be somewhat predictable and boring with the typical macho dramas of the lead's unchecked behavior, grab-assing, drinking and partying, coupled with an ending that finds our bomb diffuser bored at home with his companion and their young son, which leads to a somewhat humorous shot at a local supermarket before he signs back on for another year. The other characters in the film are just window dressing and that takes a toll by the film's end. |

No great movies here. I've only seen two movies this summer. The first was based on a recommendation from a friend,"The Hangover". My friend does not usually go to summer comedies, but his son wanted to see it so they went. He told me that he enjoyed it and I decided to go. It was an entertaining afternoon.
The only other movie I've seen this summer is "Moon". Very slow setup and character development, but entertaining overall. |

The only one of these films that is a true "cinematic" experience is TETRO. I wouldn't recommend seeing this one at home unless you have a really nice big screen, for it really deserves the full treatment. The others will be fine at home. Food, inc. is truly essential to understanding where we are...it has the same impact as Al Gore's and Inconvenient Truth, except you will NOT be able to debunk ANYTHING in this film and that's what really hits home.

I haven't heard much about Michael Moore's new film. However, his past films never fail to provoke, if not enrage or even inspire. He is a talented film maker and he has a lot of courage and balls, whether or not you like him or not. Sure, sometimes he's a little much...like the way he handled the Heston interview. Too little, too late and no class. But, I did like the way he directly confronted Dick Clark, so there. I find it somewhat humorous that the Right Wingers get so frustrated with him. They basically control media and have shut down dissent in almost every form imaginable. And yet, this one guy and precious few others somehow manage to get their voices heard. Of course, if Moore's films weren't so unbelievably profitable, he wouldn't be heard from either.
