Has anyone seen this show? Everyone seems to love it...I'm tempted to pick up Season 1 (now out on DVD)...but I don't want to be disappointed...is it as good as the hype and the reviews and the awards claim it to be?

This is the best series since Deadwood. It's better than The Sopranos because it's not as violent and cheesy, and furthermore it is incredibly well researched and never fails to surprise, disturb, and entertain. Just like Deadwood completely reinvented the western and took it to places never even dreamed of before, Mad Men is a slow burn that continually entices and envelops the viewer. It is very stylized and polished and some will find it too aloof and even mean-spirited and sexist but, that's all part of the over all period effect and it works. Cheers for the Emmy and especially for New Orleans native Brian Batt who has just the perfect role here.

I saw the first ep and disliked it so I stopped watching. Apparently it got better because people have mentioned the first show didn't indicate how good it will be. I'm also considering getting it from Netflix.

It's not for everyone. It's so deadpan that it comes across as cold. But, if you've ever lived in New York you know that its portrayal of the business world is completely accurate. For those that appreciate a rarefied glimpse into a specific moment in time, this is a very sharp series.
